How To Pick A Diamond Shape For An Engagement Ring

If you are considering a diamond engagement or wedding ring, there are a few things you will need to understand if you want to pick the perfect shape.

The Cut

Diamond cut can refer to one of two things:

  • Cut quality is how the stone has been carved and how it reflects light
  • Diamond shape can also be called a cut, and these include oval, princess cut and many other variations

The Cut Quality

Don’t worry too much about cut quality, advises The Diamond Jewellery Studio which creates one of the best engagement rings in Brisbane. Jewellers such as the aforementioned will be able to help you with all of that. But, you should have at least an understanding of it.

To evaluate the cut quality, a diamond expert assesses its symmetry, depth, facets, brilliance and overall sparkle.

Here are a few points to keep in mind:

  • For maximum brilliance and fire, the proportions of the diamond should be perfect for that shape of diamond.
  • If the proportions are well cut, the diamond will catch any light that is not reflected, creating an exceptional sparkle.
  • If the cut is too deep or too shallow, it loses light from the sides or bottom, diminishing its brilliance.

If you want to buy a solitaire diamond, as for one with either an excellent, very good or good cut.

  • The Shape

Finally, there are plenty of shapes to choose from, each with their own benefits. Here are the most popular for engagement rings.

  • Round cut

This is the shiniest of all shapes of diamonds as it has the most facets. Round cuts are available in many sizes and it is a versatile cut and highly adaptable to any shape or size of hand.

  • Princess cut

Introduced in the 1970s, this is a stunning square shape with a large number of facets and exceptional sparkle. It’s deemed the modern alternative to the round cut and it tends to look lovely in all carat sizes.

  • Emerald cut

First used in emeralds, this is a rectangular cut with long flashes of light. It is a step cut which refers to the rectangular outline of the stone and the facets that are much bigger than the above two cuts. The emerald cut is made mostly of lines that create a type of box of mirrors effect when you peer inside the diamond. It is considered a popular vintage cut with an elongating and slimming effect on fingers.

  • Oval cut

Similar to the round cut, an oval cut offers excellent fire and brilliance. While it may be a little less traditional, it does look good on all hand shapes. If you’re looking for the classic elegance of round diamonds with amazing sparkle, but want something a little different, an oval cut is for you.

  • Pear shape

Finally, the pear shape is a gorgeous combination of an oval and marquise cut and looks similar to a teardrop. This cut offers maximum fire and brilliance and is often called the tear drop due to its rounded bottom and the single point top.
