Technology is something that is forever changing, and this includes the technology that your dentist uses. Gone are the days, thankfully, when you went to a shop that had a blood and bandages pole outside, which meant they cut hair, did minor medical procedures, and were also the local dentists.
Technology has improved dentistry immensely over the years, and below are the ways that it has made a difference to dentists and their patients.
Diagnosing A Problem
In the days when you went for dental work at your local barbershop, they were limited as to what they could offer their patients. Many people would only go there to have a tooth pulled out when the pain got too much, and this was as far as the art of dentistry went.
However, as technology and our understanding of teeth have improved, we can now use technology such as x-rays which can help determine what a problem is and the best course of treatment for it.
Coping With The Pain
In the last hundred years or so the pain relief offered by dentists has also improved significantly, and the first step in this area was the introduction of Novocaine in 1901.
There was another massive change in dentistry in 1915, when carbon dioxide absorbers were introduced and for the first-time dentistry could be advertised as painless, until the anaesthetic wore off of course.
The Dental Tools
The tools the old-timers would use are a pair of pliers and maybe some straps to restrain you, but the equipment your modern dentist has at their disposal is extensive and diverse. The drills used on a patient’s teeth were initially water-powered when they were invented in 1953 by Robert Nelson, and only four years later was outdated by the introduction of the compressed air drill by John Borden. The following year in 1958 saw a vast improvement in the comfort of the patient when the first reclining dental chair was introduced, offering much more comfortable conditions when receiving dental work.
Better Treatments Available
Dentists have moved on from only extracting teeth and offering fillings, as the treatments that are available improve and become more diverse.
As our understanding of our teeth and the common problems they face becomes better understood, a local North Shore Sydney dentist, for example, can be pre-emptive with their patients and prevent conditions forming before they become prevalent.
The epitome of the treatments available is the cosmetic ones that provide both physical and emotional benefits to the patient.
Our Understanding Of Oral Hygiene
As technology has improved, so has our understanding of how teeth work and how best to care for them. Toothbrushes are being continually refined and improved, and so are the kinds of toothpaste used to clean our teeth.
With things such as electric toothbrushes, dental floss, and mouthwashes, our overall oral hygiene has improved immensely over the last century. We can clean our teeth, straighten them, or have artificial ones implanted in our jaw, at the nearby dental clinic, removing the need for dentures.
As technology improves, so will the dentist clinic, with new technologies and techniques, making the job easier for the dentists, and much more comfortable for the patients.

Dentistry has coem a long way. Now going to a dentist is not just when you have a problem. Regular dental checkups are becoming a part of our lives and it is for our good. Advanced techniques in dentistry has given a lot of comfort to the patients suffering from moderate to severe dental issues.
These technologies have really made our medical treatment so easy and yes, I recently visited to a dentist and glad all went great with the help of great doc and technology
Technology plays a great role in any field and I also happy that dentistry is also moving ahead with the technology in the treatment.
Barbershop??? Really? I wasn’t aware of that. But if dentists don’t torture you when you visit, I cannot tell my kids not to have sweets unless they want to scream with pain at the dentist’s.
Yes technology has improved dental treatment a lot. Nowdays various options are available that made dental treatment lot easier than before.
Yes technology has changed dentistry and medical field all togther. I knw earlier it use to take 2 to 4 sittings for a root canal n now it can be done in one sitting.
Yes! Agreed… Technology changed the trend of dentistry. I visited the dentist before lockdown for her root canal..and believe me my daughter was comfortable in these long sitting hours.
Technology has time again proved how it’s made our life so easy. I too have observed how dentistry has benefited from the charging technology.
This is quite an interesting & informative post. I agree that the advancement in technology has definitely improved dentistry. Now, not many people are afraid of seeing their dentist because of the availability of better treatments.
Visits to the dentist were always filled with dread earlier. I’m glad that docs now have a good grasp on advanced technology which makes the experience good for us.
You are right, all these technologies have made the medical treatment so easy and quick. Before the lockdown I had visited a dentist and I experienced all these changes .
Wow this is an highly informative post buddy, I admit I had no clue on these impressive advancements in dentistry
I have noticed some changes too infact. Abt 16 years back the tooth filling process was infact way more irritating and painful than a big thing like tooth extraction today. Dentist processes seem to have evolved a ton over the last decade or so
Totally agreed with your views. You are giving such an informative and well written article to the community. Thank you so much And Keep us Updated.
